22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Male Cardinal Crest Up Greetings

I captured this charming Northern Cardinal through the window in the afternoon of 10/24/2024 in our backyard. I combined two poses of him turning one side around to face the other. I am dedicating it in memory of my beautiful late niece Christy, whose birthday would have been on the same date that this bird appeared and raised his crest as though giving a greeting. Christy, passed away in 2022 from cancer and she too was a nature lover. It was comforting to me when doing some research online about cardinals to read the following words:"If a cardinal raises its crest on the day of a deceased relative's birthday, it is often interpreted as a symbolic sign that the departed loved one is present, sending a message of love, remembrance, and a feeling of connection, signifying they are thinking of you and are near in spirit."
