Making friends

I explored the Galapagos Islands on a tour in the winter of 2023. The mostly unpopulated islands were home to endemic birds, sealions, crabs, turtles and iguanas, and most seemed unfazed by the people stopping to photograph them. This tiny semi-terrestrial hermit crab was crabbing along Bahia Gardner beach on Isla Espanola. Crabs use their antennae feel, smell and taste. This little guy put out his antennae check out another shell, who in turn, put out its antennae, maybe to communicate that the shell was already occupied, but since the second shell was smaller than the first, I like to think they were just making friends, or maybe were already old friends, greeting one another. Hermit crabs use their long antennae for feeling.
