22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Magnificence
Bald Eagles are a symbol of freedom for so many. Seeing them posted high in the coastal pines along the Pacific in Washinton State adds to that symbolism. Something about seeing them in such a beautiful and raw landscape makes you happy to know they are living exactly how nature intended them to be. When I initially saw the location of this one, I figured it would be too far up in the trees to get a solid shot. But as I drew closer, I could see this composition unfolding. I love how the two tree species frame the eagle, truly giving it a sense of place in this unique ecosystem.
