22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Looking at the kingdom

Orangutans, the gentle giants of Southeast Asia’s rainforests, embody profound beauty in appearance and character. Draped in reddish-brown fur, they blend with their tropical habitat, their expressive eyes reflecting wisdom and introspection. These remarkable apes, known for their solitary nature, navigate treetops gracefully, showcasing a serene existence. They are known for their uncanny resemblance to humans, sharing approximately 97% of their DNA with us. Beyond their charm, orangutans are crucial seed dispersers, maintaining rainforest health. However, habitat loss and poaching threaten them. Preserving orangutans requires protecting their habitats, combating illegal activities, raising conservation awareness, ensuring their survival, and honoring life's interconnectedness.
