17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Looking at Fairview
This photograph was printed on a Times Atlas’ (1972) contents page. As the places in the back of the geography books and map collections were so functional and useful through my early education, this time I was going to reward them with my attention. To express my gratitude I choose spring blossoms (as a new promise) and a portrait where the figure is facing away from the 'new', as a metaphor for technology supplanting this real old method of looking up locations in a book. The titles come from the highlighted word on top of the page, indicating the word’s real location in the world.
