22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Locomotives
A family (at right) visiting the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento is dwarfed by huge Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe steam and diesel locomotives from the golden age of American railroads. At right is a smaller 1870s Virginia and Truckee Railroad locomotive from the Lake Tahoe area in California and Nevada. The paint design on the 1949 passenger diesel locomotive (center) was colloquially named "war bonnet," and was used on streamliner trains until the 1970s. In 1905, Engine #1010 helped set the passenger train speed record between Los Angeles and Chicago in just under 45 hours.
