The Kashaya Pomo called this place Lile'ekyo, which means "place of salt." Kashaya Pomo, the local Native Americans gathered salt at the point from natural depressions above the high tide zone. Waves splash water into these "bowls," which become lined with salt crystals as the salt water evaporates. The Kashaya traded the salt to inland tribes. Salt was an essential part of the Kashaya Pomo diet and culture. They used it to preserve food, season dishes, and make medicinal remedies. The Kashaya Pomo believed that Lile'ekyo was a place where the spirit and physical worlds intersected. They held ceremonies there to pray for good weather, good harvests, and good health. They also honored their ancestors and connected with the natural world.
