A gnarled Juniper tree resting it's weary limbs on the ground within Arches National Park in Utah. Junipers have a unique trait, acquired over many tens of thousands of years to cut off sap supply to some limbs in times of drought so that at least one of the branches will sustain the scaly needle like leaves which in turn allows the tree to produce "berries" which are actually modified cones that allow the plant to reproduce when times improve. The deadwood never recovers but they do provide us with interesting subjects to photograph and enjoy.
