Jumpers. When I was first introduced to this word the image that came into my head was of people jumping into the Yamuna to retrieve stuff from the river bed. It was not of people taking turns to jump in the silt on the banks of the Yamuna. An early Sunday morning, a cold chill still in the air, even though winter was long gone. One foot after another on the Signature Bridge. Careful. Scared. Excited. “I can’t see anything today. Feels like I’m blind.”, says a fellow photographer, but ends up finishing the day with some amazing photographs. We reach the bank, sand starts to get into our shoes. My companion knows it. It was bound to happen, he tells us. The jumpers aren’t surprised to see us. They deal with photographers every Sunday. This bunch was enthusiastic. Eager. This is the first photograph from a series of five, and each of them depicts what the jumpers do every cold, Sunday morning on the banks of the river ymuna in New Delhi, India.
