Little Jade (age 2) seeks refuge in her mother’s arms during an unusually hot 4th of July in Barrow, Alaska. For every Independence Day celebration, a baby pageant called Top of the World is held. Local babies hit the runways with full traditional attires made of different furs hunted by family members, designed and hand-stitched. Each piece that Jade is wearing was confectioned by her mother. Given the high temperatures, keeping the kids wearing their heavy parkas was an ordeal. Having a 70°F degree day in Arctic Alaska is rarity even during the summer, when temperatures average 42°F.
