20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Interpretation

Waiotapu is a spectacular site and New Zealand's most colorful attraction. There are many geothermal pools there, carved by thousands of years of volcanic activity. The photo shows the Champlain Pool from a slightly different perspective, which I captured by putting my camera very close to the water. The view appears to have been taken from a bird's eye view, and the photo can be interpreted as a slightly clouded sky (water) with orange mountains (minerals), located in the middle of nowhere (land).
