19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Inseparable Heaven and Sea

On a particularly calm clear day, I was driving on Hatteras Island in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The water was so still and skies so blue that you could not tell where the water ended and the sky began. This photo shows the shallow Pamlico Sound, looking west towards the mainland, which is too far to be seen. These salty shallows allowed the visitors to walk hundreds of yards in ankle-deep water and explore its secrets.
