21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Historical Hovander Farm Barn

Hovander homestead farmhouse. This is one of several building left from over 350 acres of a true pioneer farming experience. Along with this very dated barn, there’s another main residence from 1903. These homesteaders were very wealthy . This barn is considered very tall at 60 feet. Mr. Hovander sailed to the US in 1865. He was an immigrant from Sweden. Inside this “Swedish “ influenced structure were elaborate farming tractors and other equipment for the gardens and tending the livestock. The home was considered one of a kind. Weekends would find visitors who would buggy down a long dirt road to mingle with other elites of the day. Mr. Hovander worked with his associates and family to achieve his American dream. Today, this barn is one of the main buildings and part of the historical society.
