22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Happiness is that simple.

The story behind this photo reflects China’s status as a global manufacturing powerhouse. Driven by economic development, many residents from impoverished areas in central and western China migrate to coastal cities to work in factories, hoping for a better life. This mass movement of people has formed the backbone of China’s vast manufacturing labor force, bearing witness to the tireless efforts of countless ordinary workers. The couple in the photo was captured during my commute home, near the factory. The man, riding an electric scooter, has a cigarette dangling from his mouth, and a relaxed, content smile on his face. They seem to have just finished their workday. Despite being in an industrial setting, there’s no sign of exhaustion; instead, their faces radiate a sense of joy and satisfaction. This scene perfectly captures the essence of workers who, even in challenging environments, maintain a sense of warmth and happiness. Despite the hardships, they find moments of joy and peace in the small, everyday pleasures of life.
