Hairy woodpeckers dislodging ice crystals in GTNP

On a frigid morning of -6 degrees F (-21 C) in Grand Teton National Park the trees and bushes along the Snake River were rimed in frost. As these hairy woodpeckers darted from perch to perch they dislodged fragile ice crystals.
