22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Good Friday, Brooklyn
Cobble Hill in Brooklyn used to be home to one of NYC's most vibrant Irish-American communities, and all that came with it. Now, as gentrification pushes many of the last families out after the kids scatter, the old rituals are still observed, but differently. The local Good Friday march is a vital part of the church calendar, and now the marchers are older, and more thoughtful. I'm grateful to be able to catch and document this, before time and changes snuffs the tradition out.
