22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Golden Ghost

At the heart of the hide of Olkiramatian, every photograph captured tells a profound story of coexistence between man and nature. This ecolodge, the brainchild of the Maasai, has a noble vision: to provide additional income for the community, while preserving the delicate balance of the ecosystem. The watering hole, lit by discreet LED spotlights, provides a scene where soft light reveals the nightlife of the savannah without disturbing its inhabitants. Careful management of the lighting thus becomes a delicate dance, allowing the animals to go about their nocturnal activities in the preserved harmony of their habitat. Each image is imbued with respect, testifying to the alliance between Maasai wisdom and natural beauty. The low light levels meant that the camera had to be carefully adjusted, with a wide aperture and a slow shutter speed of around 1/100s, if you didn’t want the Isos to be too high. Despite this, I had to exceed 10000 Isos too often!
