19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
girl of the clouds

On April 2019, heavy rains fell in southern Iran, and the rivers rose, which led to torrential floods in the southwestern regions of the country, specifically in the city of Ahvas. After villages were completely submerged, including the village of Al-Fatat Benin, she fled with her family to the Badia, where she lived with her family in a plastic tent. Benin not only struggled with the freezing cold and the longing to return to her home, but the people of the other tents joined her. The gusts of the wind are harsh, and now they are living the harshness of life without the slightest necessities of life. The painful situation is that they follow the news of the low waters of their villages and they ask everyone who visits them.
