18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Geothermal Exploration

This area of geothermal pools, steam vents and mud pots is called Bumpass Hell, named after the early pioneer Mr. Bumpass, who lost his leg there in the late 1800's when he accidentally stepped into a boiling pool causing severe burns. There is a boardwalk and trail now that delineate safe passage through the area, from which visitors can view its fascinating geothermal pools, mineral deposits and streams.
