22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Gathering of the Pinks
Each year, millions of flamingos gather at Tanzania's Lake Natron, one of Africa’s largest saltwater lakes and an important reserve for migratory birds. Taken in November 2021, this photo captures a small group of lesser flamingos wading through the shallow water. The clean, minimalist scene highlights the flamingos’ pink plumage and slender legs, reflected perfectly on the calm surface of the lake. This image showcases the unique habitat of Lake Natron, which plays a critical role in supporting these birds during their migration.
