21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Forlorn

This jaguar cub was resting near the bank of the river. A couple of days before a large male had chased her from the safety of her mother while attempting to do her harm. She sincerely looked sad, lost and all alone. We observed her from a nearby boat for quite some time. Suddenly, she sprang from her position under the tree and began to move quickly along the river's edge. We followed and ultimately witnessed a very emotional reunion with her mother. It was one of the most touching moments I've seen in nature. The young jaguar held her mom in what can only be called an embrace for several minutes.
