20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Following the footprints of the explorers

There's an interesting phenomena I noticed down in Antarctica. The show is so fine and the wind so strong that after a person walks through deep snow and leaves prints, the surrounding snow will be blown away. It leaves these footprints which protrude from the ground rather than sink into it. It felt rather poignant that this was only steps from one of the first shelter set up on the Continent by Scott and his team during their expeditions.
