21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Flamingo in the Atacama Salar

There are six species of flamingos in the world. Three species are found in Chile. The species photographed is the Parina Grande Flamingo, in the Atacama Salar, 55 km from the city of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. The Flamingo feeds on phytoplankton and its beak has internal structures to filter the food that grows and lives among the clay of the lagoons.
