20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
First weeks
Photo of a few-week-old panda. The photo was taken at the Giant Panda Research Base in Chengdu. Pandas live in bamboo forests, located high in the mountains. The only place where the free-living animals can be admired is in China. At the center, females are artificially inseminated for breeding (pandas are lazy by nature and need help). The plan for the future is to open as many reserves as possible so that as many animals as possible live in the wild.
