21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Fence looking to the Sangre de Cristos

Even cows can climb steep terrain and so it is that ranch hands needed to access unusual places to erect their barbed wire. Often using juniper branches as they're so dense and aromatic they keep the moisture and insects at bay. This also had a 12 ft cliff abutting the fence and a magnificent view of the Sangre de Christo Mountains. Life was tough but hey, they didn't have to commute into the City!!
