Female Hairy Woodpecker

Hairy Woodpeckers resemble Downy Woodpeckers, except they are larger and have a larger bill. The females don't have the red markings on their head as compared to the male Hairy Woodpecker. A Hairy Woodpecker's diet is made up of insects, such as larvae of wood-boring beetles. Also on their menu to a lesser degree they eat bees, wasps, caterpillars and spiders, but rarely do they eat cockroaches, crickets and grasshoppers. I wish I could convince them to eat the pesky house flies too that invade buildings, but that doesn't seem to be on their list of preferred foods:-) They do enjoy coming to our bird feeder year around to feast on Black-oiled Sunflower seeds and Suet which is a treat for them. After I shot this picture through the window early afternoon of 10.20/2024 she flew to the suet cake for which she had her eye on.
