Eye of the Ram
A magnificent specimen of Ovis canadensis, a bighorn sheep ram, pauses by the Sylvan Pass highway in Yellowstone National Park. For thousands of years, bighorn sheep were hunted by the Tukudika or sheep eaters of the Shoshone peoples that lived in the mountains of northwest Wyoming. The massive horns of a bighorn ram were fashioned into powerful bows by the Tukudika hunters in a process involving the hot springs of the Yellowstone region. In a twist of fate thereby, the Tukudika used the horns of the bighorn ram to hunt more of the bighorn sheep.
