22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Emerald Forest
Earlier in May, I chanced upon a serene woodland of ferns in the Pacific Northwest (Northern California qualifies according to some). The sunlight, struggling to pierce the thick canopy, cast a dapple effect on the foliage, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The vibrant green ferns seemed to thrive in the cool, moist air the previous day's rain left behind.
