22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Eagles Fans

Every time the Eagles win, Philadelphia erupts into chaos—riots break out, fans climb poles in front of the police, and cars are flipped and burned. The city and state police usually focus more on damage control than making arrests. Curious about the spectacle, I decided to venture out one night and capture the scene. Amid the full swing of the madness, I snapped a shot of the pole climbers that felt almost renaissance-like in its energy. Just as I captured the moment, someone threw a beer at one of the climbers, exploding right on her head. The reactions were priceless.
