22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Driftwood in the Darkness

A driftwood log in Antelope Canyon is highlighted by the sunshine streaming down from above like nature's spotlight. Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone due to flash flooding by fast running sand-laden water, abrasively carving and polishing the walls of the canyon. The log was likely carried into the canyon by the flooding and came to rest here when the water quickly drained. Photography within the canyons is difficult due to the wide exposure range (often 10 EV or more) made by light reflecting off the canyon walls.
