Gateway to heavenly abode, Chet Singh Ghat - Varanasi

A small fortress built by Chet Singh 1770-1781 was lost to Warren Hastings battle in 1781 and went under the control of British till 18th century. In late 19th century King Prabhunarayan Singh took over the Fort and donated the Northern parts to Naga group who later on built their monasteries and Ghats. Ghats are places where rituals relating to death are performed on the Banks of river Ganges. The gateway houses a stairway, which gives access to the terrace. The terraced level is defined at two corners by two massive structures tapped by octagonal domed pavilions. There are three state temples of Shiva in the compound, built in 18th-19th century.
