22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
chahook canyon
I took this photo in Qeshm Island, Iran. I was born in Iran and still live in my country. Qeshm Island is a well-known destination in the Persian Gulf, and this canyon is particularly famous. It is called Chahkooh due to the numerous water boreholes found here, which are filled with sweet drinking water. This is remarkable because the surrounding waters of the island are very salty. People have used this area for finding drinking water for many years.
