In the capital of Spain, Madrid, a timeless tradition unfolds each October—the transhumance. Shepherds, with their diverse flock of 1600 sheep, goats, and rams, embark on a southward journey through iconic streets, evoking a cultural spectacle in the city. On October 24, 2021, I joined César, one of three shepherds overseeing the flock, as they paraded through the bustling center. Transitioning from the urban spectacle, we ventured to Casa de Campo, a protected rural area near the city. Accompanied by seven dogs and a cart laden with essentials, César shared tales of their pastoral odyssey. Covering several kilometers from Palencia to Colmenarejo, the shepherds faced challenges, especially during nights spent camping beside the flock, vigilant against lurking wolves. Guardian dogs, adept at both grazing and detecting wolves, played a crucial role in ensuring the flock's safety. As the transhumance concluded, some shepherds would return home briefly, while others remained with the flock in their winter haven. This journey, marked by tradition, resilience, and the delicate balance between man and nature, encapsulates the enduring spirit of transhumance in the heart of Spain.
