22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Carmine Battle

Along the Zambezi River the banks can be high and steep, which make this a perfect nesting area for Carmine Bee-eaters. The beautiful, small crimson birds migrate to this part of Zambia to build their nests by tunneling into the sandy river bank. Competition for a good nest site is stiff and often these feisty birds will squabble over an ideal spot in the crowded nesting location. These fights frequently become airborne conflicts with one driving the other way from a contested nest.
