Canadian goslings forage in the grass
Canada goslings like the ones pictured here are highly impressionable, and learn to swim and dive up to 40ft (12m) within 24 hours of hatching. The pictured geese are foraging in the gathering dusk for tender shoots and protein-packed insects. While these particular geese are currently camping along the frosty shores of the Huron River, increased urbanization at large has actually altered the species' migratory patterns. Suburban lawns and heated ponds create predator-free oases of warmth and plentiful food which render winter migration redundant. It remains to be seen how this phenomenon will affect the population as a whole.
