19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Broken Flag
One of my first darkroom prints of a 35mm negative. When the National Mall reopened to the public on 21 January 2021, I set off to capture images in the Field of Flags. I was greeted with sights of Americans basking in the flags and plucking their own from the ground to take as a souvenir. Before long, most of the flags were gone. Some of the final flags remaining, planted in the ground of the National Mall, were those that had been damaged in some way.
