21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Bornean orangutan

There are three species of orangutans in the world, and all three are in serious danger of extinction, mainly because of the destruction of their habitats in the jungles of Southeast Asia, which are used for palm oil cultivation. Only 70,000 individuals remain worldwide. Humans and orangutans share 97% of the genome. Along with chimpanzees and gorillas, they are our closest relatives in the animal world.
