21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Born an Hour Ago

We showed up to this hacienda and were greeted by the sight of a beautiful calf that had just been born an hour before. The calf was small and wobbly, with a wet, shiny coat of fur. Its eyes were bright and alert, and its ears were perked up. It was surrounded by its mother, who was licking it clean and nuzzling it affectionately. We stood there for a few minutes, just watching the calf. It was a miracle of life, and it was a joy to watch. We could see the love between the calf and its mother, and it was heartwarming. The calf was trying to stand up, but it was still a bit wobbly. Its mother was patient and encouraging, and eventually the calf was able to stand up on its own. It took a few steps, and then it fell over. But the calf didn't give up. It got up again and tried again. We watched as the calf learned to walk. It was a slow process, but it was also a lot of fun to watch. The calf was full of energy and determination, and it was clear that it was going to be a strong and healthy animal. We were so happy that we got to witness this special moment. It was a reminder of the beauty and wonder of nature, and it was a joy to be a part of it.
