Bodie Island Light
The Bodie Island Lighthouse, on North Carolina's Outer Banks. This current tower completed in 1872, is the third built in this vicinity, and is still working. It is 156 Ft (48 M) tall. The name is pronounced locally as "body". It is said that the name came from the number of bodies that used to wash ashore in the area from shipwrecks in the area known as "Graveyard of the Atlantic". Lighthouses and Lifesaving Stations were a big part of life on these barrier islands.
