22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Behind the Smile

On Sizdah Be-Dar, the thirteenth day of spring in Iran, when people spend their day in nature, whether in forests or by the sea, I encountered this woman on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. She wore Qasem Abadi traditional clothing, a symbol of local heritage and a deep connection to nature. In one image, with a serene smile and piercing green eyes, she seemed to embody the profound essence of life. In another, adorned in vibrant attire, she danced joyfully to the rhythm of local music. Behind her radiant smile and luminous eyes lies a story of struggle and resilience. She is a distant relative, a mother of four, who I’ve heard has survived both a brush with death and leukemia. Despite the immense challenges women in my society face, as well as the personal hardships I’ve heard about her life, I saw her glowing with hope and fully embracing the moment. I captured two images of her, these two narrating a tale of strength, beauty, and perseverance. They portray a person who, even in the face of great adversity, has preserved the essence of life. Her traditional clothing not only reflects her identity but also resonates with a profound connection to nature, culture, and her past—while radiating hope for the future.
