22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

The aurora borealis lights, also known as the northern lights. A beautiful occurrence of nature caused when a solar storm comes towards us. Some of the energy and small particles can travel down the magnetic field lines at the north and south poles into Earth's atmosphere.
