Barren Reflection
A vast blanket of purple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) is reflected from beneath the surface of this small tidepool in Oregon. When urchin populations overwhelm an ecosystem, they create urchin barrens where little else can thrive. Their vibrant color is a stark contrast to the biodiversity in their immediate vicinity.
