22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Angel of the Arctic
An Ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea) floats past the wall of a glacier. Possibly the rarest, yet most photographic, bird in existence, these frigid-friendly birds are typically only found in the high arctic, though they have been spotted as far south as California to the delight of many birders. Given the remote nature of their lives, it is difficult to make precise determinations about their populations, but a decline in sea ice due to climate change is purported to be the culprit of their declining birth rates. It is estimated only 21,000 of these majestic birds remain, giving this image a more haunting beauty.
