Snagged Squared: It was a crisp morning on the Choptank River near Tilghman Island, MD, the kind where the water shimmers in the soft light and the air is filled with the calls of gulls. I wasn’t sure what I would capture that day—perhaps the play of light on the water or a heron standing statuesque in the shallows—but fate had something far more dramatic in store. Suddenly, the boat captain pointed to the water off our port side, his voice tinged with excitement. "Look!" he called out. I turned just in time to see the Osprey dive toward the river. With a splash and a flurry of wings, it emerged from the water clutching a shimmering Rockfish in its talons—a prize for the keen-eyed predator. But something was unusual. As the Osprey climbed into the air, I noticed the fish wasn’t just any fish; a fishing hook protruded from its mouth, the lure dangling precariously as if a reminder of its narrow escape from one predator only to fall victim to another. It was a fleeting moment, the kind that makes a photographer’s pulse quicken. Instinct took over. I raised my camera and started shooting, tracking the Osprey as it fought against the weight of its catch, the fish glistening in the sunlight. The boat swayed beneath me, a challenge to keep my aim steady. And then they were gone in the instant, the Osprey heading for his nest with a great feast for the family.
