22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
American Avocet

Montrose Dunes is a small but wonderful refuge for migrating shorebirds on the doorstep of Chicago. This late summer Avocet was scouring the shoreline for food before resuming its southward voyage. A nearby pier provides a vantage point that is respectful of the bird while making them accessible to those with an appropriately long lens. Montrose Beach, Dunes and Bird Sanctuary are shining examples of what can be accomplished in terms of nature preservation in an urban setting.
