20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Alms

Palm row has become a symbol of An Giang province, Mekong Delta, Vietnam. The tree is grown mainly in the border districts of Tri Ton and Tinh Bien. During my trip to the Khmer’s pagoda Koh Kas in Tri Ton district, which is surrounded by mountains, rice fields and dotted with palm trees. It was great when I watched a group of monks go for alms in overcast weather across the rice fields to return to the pagoda, accompanied by their cute dog.
