22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Wall of Majestic Hoodoos
The approaching thunderstorm threatens the calm as imposing HooDoos stand inline towering over the PeekaBoo trail in Bryce Canyon national Park. HooDoos are formed over many thousands of years as the limestone erodes from wind and rain widening the natural cracks and faults in the sedimentary rock. The colours are laid down in strata as each period deposits various minerals on the lake bed only to be uplifted and carved into what we see today.
