22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Scissor Flycatcher soars over the wild flowers.

This Scissor Flycatcher soars above the wildflowers. My husband and I went to see if we could find this bird after hearing where the flycatcher had been seen. We drove for an hour and then took some dirt roads to find this bird nesting in a power pole. I waited and waited for the bird to fly out. Finally, the flycatcher soared, circled, and returned to his or her nest. This behavior was repeated every fifteen minutes. With my shutter set high, I hoped to photograph this bird in flight. Overall, I took many photos of this amazing bird, which is not common in the area, and captured this one.
