22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
A Quiet Death
Photo series was captured at Denver Botanic Gardens. Each September our water lilies begin to die. After blooming for two nights, the flower of a Victoria waterlily sinks underwater, and a seed pod will form if the flower was successfully pollinated. As it sinks, the lily remains open throughout the night so they can witness the stars for the first time. They watch the sun rise and glide across the sky. They absorb life as they continue to sink into the black water. No fear, just awe.
