22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A Portrait of Unrequited Love

The small town of Elliston, Newfoundland is the Root Cellar Capital of the World. This small town also hosts a nesting site for approximately 300 pairs of puffins who return each May to breed and raise their chicks. This photo was taken in July, when most of the puffins were already nesting on the island offshore, likely sitting on eggs or tending new hatchlings. This couple, who popped up from below the cliff on the mainland side of the puffin colony, are late to the party. From the looks in their eyes, the puffin on the right seems to be beseeching the other for his (or her) love; but sadly, the object of this affection seems unmoved. To me, it is a poignant depiction of unrequited love.
